Draw a Map to Clarity in Your Next Task

For this article by Jo Ilfeld, CEO of Incite to Leadership on drawing a map to clarity the image shows a dark background with arrows and milestone symbols creating a map.

This year my family is hosting an exchange student from Spain and it was her back-to-school night at our local high school, Berkeley High, which happens to have thousands of students. Even a passing period of students alone is crazy and now there would be a passing period with parents and sometimes two parents for every student.

Understandably, I was a little worried about how I would find her classes.

So I had her draw me a map.

This then got me thinking (as real-life moments often do) about how this plays out in the world of work.

When faced with a complex or ambiguous project, finding clarity can sometimes feel like an uphill battle.

When projects feel unclear or complicated, why not ask your team or boss to “draw a map”? Even a simple diagram with arrows and labels can offer insight into deliverables, stakeholders, and sequences.

Whether you sketch the process yourself or ask others to add to it, this visual approach can help clarify roles and steps.

It also engages people in a creative way, sparking new ideas and perspectives.

So the next time you get a task that feels ambiguous and you’re unsure of the path forward, grab a pen and start drawing. You may be surprised how effective it can be in leading you and your team toward clarity and success.
